THERE was no presence of single security operatives in Benisheikh town of Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State as a result of attack by suspected Boko Haram sect members who stormed the town, killing no fewer than 54 persons while over 100 houses and vehicles were also burnt down, eyewitnesses told Nigerian Tribune in Maiduguri.
Borno State Police Commissioner, Lawan Tanko, told newsmen in Maiduguri, on Wednesday that, they had no record of casualty, but had sent their men to ensure normalcy in the trouble.
Armed terrorists dressed as military men had, on Tuesday evening, attacked motorists on the expressway near Benisheikh town, killing no fewer than 54, and abducting several others, eyewitnesses said, adding that the insurgents stormed the town at about 5:00p.m.; and staged a road block on the Maiduguri-Kano expressway before they started their attacks.
Garba Ngamdu, a senior government adviser on labour, told journalists that the gunmen killed five persons in Benisheikh and set ablaze at least houses and shops.
“The attack occurred in the evening of Tuesday at about 5:00 p.m., when the Boko Haram gunmen attacked our town, killing five persons and burning several houses. No fewer than 100 had been counted. They also attacked motorists and killed several persons of which I cannot give actual figure of casualties,” Ngamdu said.

While confirming the incident to newsmen, the state police commissioner said the police authorities were yet to gather details of the incident. ‘It was an unfortunate incident that happened, in Benisheikh. But we are yet to get details of what happened especially on casualty figure. We have sent a team of our men down there to ascertain what happened so that we can brief the press properly.”
A commercial driver, Haliru Ismail, said his vehicle was burnt and some of his passengers were shot at, while others were taken away by the Boko Haram gunmen.
“The gunmen who attacked us were dressed like soldiers, and carrying heavy arms,” Ismail said.
