Three suspected cultists were allegedly burnt to death, with 18 others arrested at a spot close to Nafsat praying ground on Ilorin Airport- Eyenkorin highway yesterday.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Kwara Command, Mr. Olufemi Fabode confirmed death of the three of the suspects said to be members of the Aiye Confraternity.
He stated that four other members of the Confratanity were seriously injured and another 12 were receiving treatment at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin.
He told The Herald that the suspected cultists who were mistaken as armed robbers emerged from the bush at about 3a.m where they had gone for initiation ceremony only to be confronted by a vigilante group.
In the encounter, three of the cultists were cut down and burnt with disused tyres, while 18 others were arrested
When The Herald paid the second visit to the scene yesterday, the three dead bodies had been evacuated by the police and taken to the UITH morgue.
Eye witness account said the slain cultists had charms on their bodies and were equally armed.
Although efforts to get policemen at the Eyenkorin Police Post for comment on the development proved abortive, but sources at the state police headquarters told The Herald that the 18 suspects arrested were alleged to be cultists who had gone for initiation, having converged at a point behind Nasfat praying ground from different states of the federation.
The police PPRO said the communities in the area who had been alerted about the presence of strangers in the area mistook them for armed robbers.
“The vigilante in the area now laid ambush for them till 3a.m. As luck would have it, the Suspected cultists ran into the ambush leading to a bloody encounter,” Fabode explained.
The PPRO said that investigation into the matter has commenced immediately
