Saintfiet: Malawi to do More Work Ahead Eagles Clash

Boastful Malawi caretaker coach, Belgian-born Tom Saintfiet has been humbled following a losing start in his new job on Saturday, and now admits he has a lot of more work to do on The Flames ahead of their September's clash with the Super Eagles of Nigeria, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Saintfiet, who lost his spirited bid to land Nigeria football Technical Director job offered to help Malawi sort out the Super Eagles hurdle in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. And he had boasted that he wasn't after money in his new job as The Flames caretaker coach.

On Saturday, Saintfiet lost his first match in charge of the Flames: a quarter- final match with Zimbabwe at the revived Cosafa Cup. Saintfiet's team lost to the defending champions on penalties after the regulation time ended 1-1 .

“Now we have to switch focus to the Nigeria game, but there is more work to be done,”  Malawi newspaper, The Nation  qoutes Saintfiet as saying after his team's ouster."

Then he says of  his mood: “Here is a coach who is disappointed with the result, but proud of his team.

“We played well in the second-half. I am not happy that such a nice game could be decided on penalties.”

Meanwhile, former Malawi captain Peter ‘Mjojo’ agrees with Saintfiet that there is a lot to be done if the Flames are to realise their ambition of upsetting the tables against Nigeria’s Super Eagles in September.

“We have to be honest with ourselves, that it is going to be an uphill task to beat Nigeria if the current performance is anything to go by,” submits Mponda, Malawi captainthe for seven years.
