Striking federal health workers resume duty

Striking Federal health workers resumed work yesterday as life returned to the University of Teaching Hospital (UITH)

When our Health Correspondent visited the hospital, patients were seen receiving treatment with others waiting for their turn.

The Federal health workers embarked on strike due to what they called the inability of the Federal Government to meet up with their demands.

The demands are the non-skipping of Consolidated Health Salary Scale (CONHESS) 10 in line with the judgment of the National Industrial Court, modalities for the payment of consultancy and specialist allowance and the review of retirement age for health workers from 60 to 65 years among others.

The chairman of the Academic Staff Union of the hospital, Comrade Kunle Oduoye said they were directed to suspend the strike late Tuesday night after a meeting which lasted for about 12 hours conveyed by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emake Wogu.

Oduwoye explained that the suspension of the strike was to give the government two weeks to implement a new agreement reached  by the unions, The Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Federal Ministry of Health and the Head of Service.
